KOTA KINABALU – Known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and vibrant cultural tapestry, Sabah is emerging as an international hub for wellness and fitness tourism. This potential was on full display during the recently concluded Piloxing Voyage 3.0, a transformative four-day travel fitness retreat that brought together 76 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei.
Hosted at a resort in Kota Kinabalu, the retreat showcased the unique appeal of Sabah’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and rich heritage.

A Perfect Fit for Wellness Tourism
Founding Partner of Beyond Footprints Travel Singapore, Chu Mingwei, highlighted why Sabah was the ideal choice for the third edition of the Piloxing Voyage series.
“The natural environment, vibrant culture, and unparalleled hospitality of Sabah made us feel at home. This perfect combination is exactly what we were looking for in a wellness retreat destination,” Chu remarked during the event.
Sabah provided the ideal backdrop for the retreat, allowing participants to relax, rejuvenate, and engage in empowering fitness activities. The choice of Sabah also aligned with the growing demand for thematic travel events that blend wellness, adventure, and cultural exploration.
Fitness Meets Culture and Adventure
Led by Senior Master Instructor Rasidah Caudal, the retreat featured Piloxing, a unique combination of Pilates, boxing, and high-energy dance workouts. Founded by professional dancer Viveca Jensen in 2009, Piloxing aims to foster both physical strength and community bonding.
“We aim to create a community that enjoys fitness holidays,” Rasidah explained. “Sabah offers endless opportunities for adventure seekers to explore its diverse culture and delicious food—things you won’t find elsewhere.”
The program also included cultural and adventure activities, such as visits to the Mari Mari Cultural Village, the Anjung Kinabalu market, and Tunku Abdul Rahman Parks for water-based excursions. These experiences not only enriched the participants’ understanding of Sabah’s heritage but also brought the group closer together.
Community and Connection at the Core
Chu noted that thematic travel events like Piloxing Voyage allow participants to form deeper connections through shared experiences. “Travelling together while engaging in fitness activities creates a sense of community and lasting friendships,” he said.
This sentiment was echoed by Rasidah, who observed how the Piloxing exercises strengthened bonds among travelers from different countries. “My experience here has been incredible. The people are so friendly, and there’s something uniquely special about Sabah,” she shared.
The retreat also highlighted Sabah’s rich cultural diversity, with participants marveling at the state’s unique blend of ethnic groups and traditions. “The variety of tribes and cultures here is extraordinary. It’s something you rarely see elsewhere,” Rasidah added.

Looking Ahead
The success of Piloxing Voyage 3.0 has laid the foundation for even larger-scale wellness retreats in Sabah. Chu hinted at the possibility of the next Piloxing Voyage returning to Indonesia but emphasized the significance of Sabah’s role in elevating the series.
Chu also expressed appreciation for the support provided by Sabah Tourism Board, Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jimit, who hosted a welcoming dinner, and ground handler Funholiday Tours and Travel Managing Director Connie Chong for ensuring a seamless arrangement.
“The support from stakeholders, including the Sabah Tourism Board and ground handlers like Funholiday Tours and Travel, was vital to the event’s success. Their collaboration ensured a seamless and unforgettable experience,” Chu said.
As wellness tourism continues to grow globally, Sabah is poised to become a leading destination, combining its pristine landscapes, rich culture, and world-class hospitality to offer transformative travel experiences.

A Bright Future for Fitness Holidays
With fitness holidays gaining popularity, Sabah’s unique offerings make it a perfect fit for adventure and wellness seekers alike. Piloxing Voyage 3.0 not only celebrated fitness but also created lasting memories, connections, and an appreciation for Sabah’s vibrant heritage.
“Fitness holidays are the next big thing,” Rasidah affirmed. “And Sabah is undoubtedly one of the best places to experience them.”
